Helichrysum

Helichrysum Italicum Roth (Don) – or helichryse – is a uniquely Italian and Mediterranean aromatic plant, with a characteristic gilded yellow flower whose flowering extends between May and August. It thrives along sandy and rocky coastlines, particularly in areas such as Sardinia, Puglia, Calabria, Tuscany, Liguria and Corsica .

The curative qualities of the Helichryse flower have been well known since antiquity, as it was used as a diuretic, in syrups for respiratory tract conditions, in ointments for the treatment of joint inflammation and rheumatic pain and in compresses for ocular infections.

 In external and cosmetological uses, the Helichryse is a coadjutant in cases of dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. It has a soothing effect on burns and sunburns, it helps in the regression of chilblains and oedemas, visibly improves fragile or pockmarked skin and is also used in the treatment of wounds and scars.

The unmistakable and very particular fragrance of the flowers can also be inspiring and uplifting.

Despite all of these powerful properties, the Helichryse flower has been largely ignored in modern pharmacological research.
